Federal Anniversary Schwing Festival in Appenzell (has blocks)
Schwingen is a popular Swiss variant of freestyle wrestling practiced on sawdust. Schwingen is considered the Swiss national sport, still ahead of Hornussen and stone throwing. The wrestlers wear “Schwingerhosen” (wrestling pants) with belts that are used for gripping. Throws and holds are common, as the first wrestler to pin his opponent’s shoulders to the floor wins the match.
The origins of Swiss mountain Schwingen cannot be precisely dated. The first known depiction, found in Lausanne Cathedral, dates back to the 13th century. In the 19th century, ambitious physical education teachers brought Schwingen to the cities. Thus, what had originally been a game played by shepherds and farmers evolved into a national sport that encompasses all social classes.
Traditionally, an ESV anniversary celebration takes place only once every 25 years. The event on September 8, 2024, in Appenzell, Switzerland, will also be a unique milestone in the careers of each of the 120 best wrestlers.
